Dylan Bundy and a pair of relievers combined to throw a three-hit shutout, and Dwight Smith Jr. homered as one day after being shut out by the Tampa Bay Rays, the Baltimore Orioles returned the favor with a 3-0 whitewashing Saturday at Orioles Park at Camden Yards.
Tampa Bay had opportunities in each of the first two innings by getting leadoff hits. Brandon Lowe took the first pitch of the game and lined it into right for a base hit, and Avisail Garcia doubled to begin the second, but neither runner could be brought across by Tampa Bay hitting.
Baltimore took advantage of their leadoff hit in the first, as Jonathan Villar started with a double, moving to third on a base hit by Trey Mancini and scoring on a double play grounder from Smith.
The Orioles doubled their lead in the third, as Stevie Wilkerson and Austin Wynns each singled, and a fielder's choice ground ball by Villar brought Wilkerson in to make it 2-0.
Smith's solo homer in the fourth would be the final run scored in the game.
Tampa Bay would not have a hit between Garcia's leadoff double in the second and a one-out double by Michael Perez that finally chased Bundy from the game. Willy Adames softly grounded back to reliever Shawn Armstrong, who threw the ball over the head of Chris Davis. But Adames was called out on interference and Perez, who had crossed the plate, was sent back to second base, and would be stranded there.
Chirinos (4-1) would work into the eighth inning before Jose Alvarado got the final two outs of the inning.
The Rays also had a chance in the ninth against Mychal Givens, as Ji-Man Choi drew a one-out walk, but Nate Lowe grounded into a game-ending double play to finish the contest.
